23 March: Jinnah, Pakistan, and Imran Khan

By: Azhar Azam

23 March is observed as Pakistan Day or Pakistan Resolution Day in Pakistan every year in commemoration of adoption of Lahore Resolution in 1940.

The so-called resolution called for establishing an independent state comprising provinces of sub-continent where Muslims live in majority.

However this day has some other significance as well!

It is also the day when Dominion of Pakistan marked a transition toward Islamic Republic of Pakistan (IRP) after the enforcement of first constitution of the country on March 23, 1956.

Back in 1940, the Muslims of subcontinent united selflessly, sectlessly and devotedly under wiry but valiant, chaste, and steadfast leadership of Mohammad Ali Jinnah – pulling freedom from the jaws of Indo-British regime.

The Jinnah-led fervent, gritty, and cohesive movement flashed a new country – Pakistan – on the map of the world in a record period of just seven years (1947).

Ailing Jinnah not only smartly led his people from the front – collaring all the deceptive tactics by the opponents – but also transformed into striving people his strong will and meticulous discipline.

Eventually, he succeeded to groom a peaceful force of freedom fighters – irrespective of caste, creed and financial soothe – which was inculcated with his tigerish and stalwart characteristics.

It was Jinnah’s charismatic leadership that pressed his rivals to pay tribute to him. Lord Mountbatten greeted him as ‘Jinnah never did an agreement by bowing down to anyone but on equal basis’.

Gandhi said ‘I believe no power can buy Mr. Jinnah’. Sir Winston Churchill hailed Jinnah saying ‘I can never forget this great leader from my heart’.

Retired British Field Marshall and Governor General of India (1943-1947) Lord Wavell extolled him ‘Jinnah is not just an honest Muslim leader but also a great lawyer’.

American South Asia history professor Stanley Wolpert at university of California writes in his book 'Jinnah of Pakistan (1984)’:

‘Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three.’

Fast forward to March 23, 2018!

It has absolutely a ‘shaggy dog story’ that except for few, each and every political leader models himself as successor of Jinnah.

At the same time, these so-called leaders compromise national interest and nation’s dignity straightaway to plead ‘international patronage’ to gain power. Then, they dissect the nation on ethnic, sectarian, and linguistic grounds to split or gain vote bank.

There is not a single example in the history that Jinnah had in his long struggle, ever pursued ‘foreign backing’ or exploited his followers on religious footings to strengthen his following.

Such leaders also mock and mend the constitution that suits them the best in the name of ‘serving people and country’. The civil law enforcement agencies are manipulated by them at their will and wish.

While talking to the international media on the constitution of Pakistan – Jinnah said that who am I to constitute the constitution of Pakistan when it has already been revealed for Muslims 1400 years ago.

Inspired by Jinnah, state’s policemen had the audacity to deny Governor General of Pakistan (Jinnah himself) to cross the red line until his own written permission or shoot if defied. And Jinnah happily moved back with pride.

Unfortunately, these feigned leaders have always been in pursuit of sustaining power, accumulating bucks, and fostering nepotism – razing merit, marring economy and denying justice to the people of Pakistan.

As a result, the institutions and the people are exterminating themselves with the social vices such as fraud, corruption, lying, bribery, and narcissism.

But the hope must never be lost as there is always a room to repent, revert and neutralize the lacking.

After years and years of dismay, suppression and lawlessness, we are witnessing a New Pakistan (Naya Pakistan) which is awakening people to demand their rights and justice, strengthening institutions, compelling accountability, and defeating the menace of terrorism.

Beyond any political and opinion differences, we should be magnanimous and give full credit to Imran Khan who truly reflects the vision of Jinnah.

His neat, loud, and staunch movement for justice not only distraught pro status-quo political elite and corrupt mafia dominating the country for decades but also enthused people of Pakistan to seek respect, justice, merit, accountability, health, and education.

Now the argument is quickly building among the people that these economic terrorists must be treated as the conventional terrorists – whose common agenda is to deprive Pakistan and the people of Pakistan as otherwise it could chuck the country into an even murky social and financial environment.

It is not a matter of supporting Imran Khan, it’s a matter of supporting his cause to bring justice within the political parties, within the society, and within the institutions – as well as to shut down election outlets selling a blend of racism, ethnicity, cultural and sectarian products.
